Curly Eastern Black Walnut

Curly Eastern Black Walnut

$299.00

Claro Walnut (Juglans nigra) can be found throughout the east coast and midwestern United States, typically living to the ripe age of 130+ years. When sawn on a particular axis (radially), a process called Quarter-sawing, beautifully colored stripes can be liberated in the wood as seen on this piece here. In addition, in rare instances the wood fibers can become compressed, almost like an accordion, giving a beautiful curly appearance as the light reflects or absorbs differentially across the undulating grain. In essence, this particular piece is a 2-for-1 because it’s BOTH quartersawn and curly. The base of this stunning board is a beautiful piece of solid flame birch with inlaid copper along the sides. The conservation status of this tree is currently “Least Concern” by the IUCN 3.1 index. Finished in food safe shellac. Approximate dimensions are 24” L x 7” W x 2” H.
