Marbled Sugar Maple
Occasionally, a piece of wood is found that is so unusual and so rare, that we’re not even sure what to call it, like this piece of stunning hard sugar maple. It was found by my friend Bob Kloes, of Kloes Custom Woodwork, and he set it aside for me as a most unusual specimen. The figuring in the wood includes crinkling, bird’s eye, bark inclusions, and disorganized burl figuring - so unusual that there is no standard term to describe this visually. I think “Marbled” best fits its appearance. Hard sugar maple is an example of a plentiful domestic wood that provides unbelievable beauty, and is in ample supply, underscoring the notion that we don’t have to turn to the rainforest to find beautiful woods. The base of this stunning board is a beautiful piece of solid ebonized Eastern Black Walnut with inlaid copper along the sides. The conservation status of this tree is currently “Least Concern” by the IUCN 3.1 index. Finished in food safe shellac. Approximate dimensions are 24” L x 7” W x 2” H.
