A Collaboration Between Raine and Paul of Copper Pig Fine Woodworking.
Beginning with the finest Curly Cherry wood, Raine engraved the composition by hand using pyrography, carefully striking a balance between illustration and negative space to allow the undulating chatoyant wood grain to shine through, a most perfect marriage. The tray is then finished in platina shellac, the highest purification of shellac allowing maximal clarity, protection, and restoration in the far future as we hope this piece will be passed down between loved ones.
Raine’s Words: When Paul reached out to me offering to send over some of his incredible pieces for me to add to, I was so excited to take this on as one of my first projects of the new year. Cicadas have always fascinated me, and I always gravitate back to using them as a muse. Each cicada listens to its intuition and takes cues from the earth to emerge when they know it is right for them. No matter how long it takes them, they are freed of their outer shell and the darkness of underground. They take to the skies and the trees to sing, even if it’s for only a small fraction of time. This cycle of rebirth is what inspired the interconnected theme of this piece.
Paul’s Words: When I first saw Raine’s work, the creative voice was immediately obvious; creating mystical and almost spiritual compositions from virtually nothing other than the fantastical world residing inside them. So often fine woodworking is made and then just left blank, but what IF we combine fine woodworking WITH the amazing fantasy illustrations flowing in Raine’s brain? I reached out and here we are with our first collaboration: “Entangled Rebirth”, a fine art Everyday Tray.
