Quarter-Sawn Banded Sycamore

Quarter-Sawn Banded Sycamore

$299.00

Sycamore is a wood that has been unfairly neglected, and I’m not even sure why, because when it is cut on a particular axis, radially, a process called Quarter-sawing, beautiful rays (the little medium brown specs) are liberated as on the stunning piece you see here. Furthermore, you can also see there is banding to the wood where the grain reverses direction back and forth as you trace across it, giving beautiful light and dark zones. Historically, sycamore has been used as a secondary wood for drawers on fine furniture from England, however I’m not sure that does this beautiful wood justice. Here, on this piece, it’s the STAR of the show. The base of this stunning board is ebonized along the sides and has inlaid brass stringing running down the length. The conservation status of this tree is currently “Least Concern” by the IUCN 3.1 index. Finished in food safe shellac. Approximate dimensions are 24” L x 7” W x 2” H.
