Carpathian Elm Burl

Carpathian Elm Burl

$299.00

Burls are essentially benign tree tumors, and exhibit some of the most unusual and beautiful patterns that exist in wood. This burl comes from an elm tree found along the Carpathian Mountain Range in Europe and is so highly figured, it almost looks 3 dimensional. This veneer was harvested over 60 years ago and sat forgotten in a shed in Massachusetts since the early 1970’s. The homeowner contacted me asking if I would like to look through her dad’s old woodworking supplies, and that is when I found it, a true diamond in the rough. The base of this stunning board is a beautiful piece of Eastern Black Walnut with inlaid copper along the sides. The conservation status of this tree is currently “Data Deficient” by the IUCN 3.1 index, because it’s numbers haven’t been adequately assessed recently. Finished in food safe shellac. Approximate dimensions are 24” L x 7” W x 2” H.
